Toby Kassell is an artist, performer and co-founder of No Deadline.
After graduating from the Royal Ballet School in London, he worked as a professional dancer internationally over a period of 26 years, in Zurich Ballet, Ballet de Santiago de Chile, Aalto Theater Essen, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin and Staatstheater Saarbrucken, as well as GöteborgsOperans Danskompani (2006-2020). Over the years Toby has developed his own improvisational approach, and through his current work at Balettakademien Göteborg, he is focusing on developing his own methodology of improvisation and performance strategy.
The direction of his work led composers Magda Mayas and Johan Jutterström to collaborate with him on their phD performances.
Toby Kassell’s artistic practice focuses on the wordless communication between all performers in a work, and the breaking down of hierarchies between art forms which naturally happens as a consequence.
Title: Sonic Bodies
Music: Louisa Palmi
Choreography: Toby Kassell
Dancers: Anna-Greta Himmer, Frida Olofsson
Duration: ca 35 min
Sonic Bodies is an exploration of sound and physical bodies and how they are composed equally from different perspectives and discourses. Through a pragmatic approach to the material an associative poetry is revealed through layers that are fragmented and rebuilt over and over again only to reach a point of destruction. The work arises from nothing and leaves nothing behind except memory and new physical state. The dancers become musical material that interprets itself and the music a physical entity. A timeless union that suggests a new interpretation and identity.
